Maurice H. Unger

Maury Unger - A Writer

Born in Alabama and raised in Maryland, Maurice—Maury—is a graduate of the University of the South (Sewanee).  He served in the US Navy as a Naval Flight Officer with tours of duty that included flight operations in the Antarctica and flying the A-6E Intruder from the decks of numerous aircraft carriers.  Upon retiring from the Navy, he worked in the fields of aviation logistics support and information technology management.  He is a member of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), the Association of Naval Aviation (ANA), The Intruder Association, the Old Antarctic Explorers (OAE) Association and the Military Writers Society of America (MWSA).  Maury and his wife, Eleanor, reside in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  They have two grown sons and two grandchildren.

When Destinies Collide is Maury’s first novel.  Having been a resident of Virginia Beach for over 30 years, he has had ample opportunity to witness the vulnerability of the Tidewater Virginia area to hurricanes and nor'easters.  During August 1995, when it appeared that Hurricane Felix was about to hammer Virginia Beach, his creative mind was triggered to write this action/suspense novel with the hurricane as a precipitous motivator for various human interactions.  His storytelling reveals all the elements of the human psychic: greed, terror, courage, love, heartbreak, kindness, perseverance and revenge.  Although the basis for his novel is pure fiction, these dynamics of human interaction could occur to any one of us to a greater or lesser degree.

Maury's second novel, Terrorism's Shifting Winds, was published in January 2009.  It is an intriguing sequel to When Destinies Collide.   The following provides a brief overview:

Islamic terrorists are running hand-in-hand with powerful drug trafficking cartels in the Western Hemisphere to launch new attacks against the United States.  Terrorism's Shifting Winds is an action/suspense thriller that takes this collaboration between Mid-East terrorists and drug traffickers and weaves a story of intrigue that entails not only drug trafficking but the smuggling of a weapon of mass destruction into the United States.  Jackie Randolph, an impetuous but resourceful ex-special agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration, is rehired for an undercover role.  Toss in the antics of some fearsome, erstwhile Tennessee moonshiners, Mexican drug traffickers and some not so innocnet white collar vacationers at a wilderness retreat, and you have a robust tale about heroes and villians.
